What’s the typical format of Club tennis?

Bearing in mind that MSTC’s primary focus is social tennis, most events are mixed doubles. Singles and/or doubles play is also available as a part of various tournaments and other competitive events.

How do I find out about the details for Club events?

In addition to the calendar on this website, MSTC publishes a monthly newsletter which details upcoming events, registration information, and other news of interest to club members. MSTC News is sent via e-mail free to all members and is also available on this website.

Do I need to make reservations to play in a Club event?

Summer outdoor tennis (with the exception of tournaments) is available on a drop-in basis – in other words, no reservations are necessary. On the other hand, you’ll need book reservations in advance (and pay a nominal fee) to play in tournaments and indoor events.  Please check the newsletter or the event calendar on this site for special instructions to attend each event.

Is there a charge to play in Club events?

With the exception of tournaments (which have a nominal charge), during the summer we offer outdoor tennis activities (without refreshments) at no charge. During the indoor tennis season, fees for tennis events not connected with a social activity typically run in the $12-16 range for at least two hours of play.  Where tennis events and social activities are held together, the charge is typically $16, which includes court time and refreshments.

If I register for a Club event and don’t show up... what are my obligations?

The rule here is to be respectful of your fellow Club members.  If you find a substitute for your slot, at an event for which you’ve registered, you’ll have no obligation whatsoever. But, if you just don’t show up, you’ll be responsible for the fees you would have paid at the door.

Will I need to find my own partner to play with for MSTC events?

No! For most events you can register yourself, and the event coordinator will match you with various partners during the event. The event calendar contains all of the contact information for each particular event.

For MSTC events held at a tennis club do I need to be a member of that club to participate?

No!  Our event charges include admission and guest fees at the respective tennis facilities.  We do have to contract for our court time at the club venues we use as we do not have our own courts.

Who actually runs MSTC?

MSTC is a voluntary organization.  Our Board of Directors is elected at the club's annual meeting, and serves for a year.  Events and social activities are coordinated by the Board and volunteers within the club.

What tennis skills levels will I find among club members?

Typically club member tennis skills ratings range from 1.5 - to - 5.0, with the majority playing at 2.5 - to - 4.0 levels.  MSTC uses a self-rating system, and average club ratings tend to be higher than NTRP ratings.  To ensure relatively well-balanced play, rating restrictions may apply to some events.

What other benefits come with MSTC membership?

The Club often sponsors other social events, such as dances, golf, or bicycle outings.  Notice of these events appears in our newsletter and the event calendar on this website. Also, club members may place classified ads in the newsletter at no charge (with prior Board approval, of course).

What does it cost to join MSTC (membership fees)?

Annual membership dues are $25 (January 1 to December 31). We allow prospective new members to attend 1 event to 'try us out' before joining by paying the non-members fee in addition to the event fee. This is done to be fair and equitable to all our members.  Download a membership application or send us an e-mail concerning membership.

Can I attend an event if I'm not a member?

MSTC allows prospective new members to attend one event before joining – for a 'look before joining' visit – by paying a non-member fee of $5, plus the applicable event fee.  We do this to be fair and equitable to all our members.
